(146) Jesus Again Predicts His Death

Matthew 20:17-28, Mark 10:32-45, Luke 18:31-34

[A]Now as they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, they were amazed -- and afraid -- as they followed Him. And He again took the twelve aside and began to tell them the things that would happen to Him.

[B]“Look,” He said, “we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. He will be betrayed and delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death. They will deliver Him to the Gentiles, who will mock Him, scourge Him, spit on Him, insult Him, and crucify Him. They will kill Him, but the third day He shall rise again.”

[C]Now they did not understand any of this, for this saying was hidden from them. They just did not know what He was talking about.

[D]Then the mother of Zebedee’s children came to Him with her sons, James and John. They worshiped and requested a certain thing from Him. “Master,” they said, “we want you to grant our desire.”

[E]“What is it you want me to do for you?” He asked her and her sons.

And she said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit with you in your kingdom, one on your right hand and the other on your left.”

“Yes, that’s what we want,” said James and John. “We want to sit by you in your glory.”

[F]But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I will drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”

      [G]“We are able,” they answered.

And Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink of my cup and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit at my right and left hand is not mine to give. This belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

[H]Now when the ten heard this, they were very displeased and moved with indignation against the two brothers, James and John. [I]But Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that those who are recognized to rule over the Gentiles exercise dominion and lordship over their people, and the higher officials exercise their authority over them. [J]But it will not be like this among you. Instead, whoever desires to be great among you, let him minister to you. [K]And whoever among you will be first shall be servant of all. [L]For even the Son of Man did not come to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Matthew 20:17-28, KJV

17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, 18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. 20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. 21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. 22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. 24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. 25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark 10:32-45, KJV

32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, 33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: 34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. 36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? 37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: 40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. 42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Luke 18:31-34, KJV

31 Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: 33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. 34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
