[1] According to Matthew 14:16 Joseph was the son of Jacob. Apparently Joseph was the son-in-law of Heli, and Mary was the daughter of Heli, and this is why Luke traces the line all the way back to Adam. After Satan deceived Eve, God said to the serpent, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise his heel” (Gen. 3:15).
