(163) Whose Son Is the Messiah?

Matthew 22:41-46, Mark 12:34b-37, Luke 20:41-44

[A]Jesus was teaching in the temple, and while the Pharisees were still gathered together, and since no one was asking Him any more questions, He asked them, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?”

“The Son of David,” they replied.

Then Jesus said, “How is it that the scribes say that Christ is the Son of David? [B]For David himself, in the book of Psalms, led by the Holy Spirit, said:

The LORD said to my Lord:

Sit at my right hand, until I

      make your enemies your footstool.[1]

[C]“Now if David himself calls Him Lord, then how is He his son?”

[D]The common people heard Him gladly, but no one was able to answer Him a word. And neither did anyone dare ask Him any more questions from that day forward.

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Mark 12:34b-37, KJV

34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. 35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? 36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. 37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.
