(179) Jesus Anointed and Betrayed

Matthew 26:1-16, Mark 14:1-11, Luke 21:37-38; 22:1-6, John 12:2-8

[A]During the day Jesus taught in the temple, and at night He would go out and stay on the mount called Olivet. [B]Then, early in the morning, all the people would come to hear Him in the temple.

[C]Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near. And it came about, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples, “You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to be crucified.”

[D]Then the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled together at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. They plotted how they might take Jesus by trickery and put Him to death, for they feared the people. “But not during the feast,” they said, “lest there be an uproar among the people.”

[E]Now Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, where they made a supper for Him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. As Jesus sat there, a woman came to Him with an alabaster flask, which held a pound of very expensive oil of spikenard. It was Mary. She broke the flask and poured it on His head and anointed His feet, then wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

[F]Now when His disciples saw this, some were indignant and asked what was the purpose of this waste. One of them, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”

[G]“Yes,” the others said among themselves. “Why was this wasted? For it might have been sold for much more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.”

And they spoke out against her.

[H](Now Judas had said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag. He was in charge of it and would steal from it.)

[I]When Jesus understood, He said to them, “Let her alone. Why are you bothering her? For she has done a good thing for me. [J]You will always have the poor with you, and you can help them any time you wish. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could and came ahead of time to anoint my body with fragrant oil. She kept this and poured it on me for the day of my burial. [K]Truly, I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

[L]Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot. He was numbered among the twelve, but he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains how he might betray Him to them. “What will you give me if I deliver Him to you?” he said to them. When they heard this, they were glad and promised to give him money -- thirty pieces of silver. He agreed, and from that time he looked for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when the crowd was not around.

(179) Jesus Anointed and Betrayed

Matthew 26:1-16, KJV

And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, 2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people. 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. 8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. 10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. 11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. 12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. 13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. 14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

Mark 14:1-11, KJV

After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. 2 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people. 3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head. 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 6 And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. 7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 8 She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. 10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

Luke 21:37-38; 22:1-6, KJV

37 And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. 38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

John 12:2-8, KJV

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
