(79) The Names and Mission of the Twelve

Matthew 10:1-15, Mark 6:7-11, Luke 9:1-5

[A]Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, the unclean spirits, to cast them out and heal all kinds of sickness and cure all kinds of disease. And He began to send them out two by two.

[B]Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon (who is called Peter), Andrew (the brother of Simon), James (the son of Zebedee), John (the brother of this James), [C]Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the publican), James (the son of Alphaeus), Lebbaeus (whose surname was Thaddaeus), [D]Simon (the Canaanite), and Judas Iscariot (who betrayed Him).

[E]These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying, “Do not go among the Gentiles nor enter any city of the Samaritans. [F]But rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. [G]And as you go, preach, saying: The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

[H]So He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God, saying, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. [I]Take nothing for your journey, except your staff and one coat apiece, and the shoes you wear. Take no bread, bag, or money in your belts, neither gold, silver, or copper; for a worker is worthy of his food.

[J]“Whatever city or town you enter, inquire who is worthy in it. When you enter his home, greet it. If it is worthy, stay there until you leave that city and give the home your blessings. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

[K]“Whoever will not receive you, nor heed your words, shake the very dust off your feet as you leave that house or city. This will be for a testimony against them. Truly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.”

Matthew 10:1-15, KJV

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. 9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, 10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. 11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. 12 And when ye come into an house, salute it. 13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Mark 6:7-11, KJV

7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: 9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats. 10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place. 11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
