(95) Jesus Predicts His Death

Matthew 16:21-28, Mark 8:31-38; 9:1, Luke 9:22-27

[A]From that time on Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, be killed, and after three days rise again. He said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders, chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.”

[B]He spoke very openly about this; so Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid such a thing, Lord! This will never happen to you.”

[C]But Jesus turned around, looked at His disciples, and rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an offense to me; for you don’t mind the things of God, but think like men.”

[D]And when He had called the people to Him, including His disciples, He said to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [E]For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will find it. Yes, he shall save his life. [F]For what shall it profit a man if he should gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For what has a man accomplished if he should gain the whole world and lose himself, and be cast away.

[G]“Therefore, whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His own glory and the glory of His Father. He will come with His holy angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works.”

[H]And He said to them, “Truly, I tell you, there are some standing here who shall not taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming to establish the kingdom of God with power.”

(95) Jesus Predicts His Death

Matthew 16:21-28, KJV

21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. 28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Mark8:31-38; 9:1, KJV

31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. 34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it. 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Luke 9:22-27, KJV

22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels. 27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
