(108 The Children of Abraham, and the Children of the Devil
John 8:31-47
[31]Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him, “If you continue in my word, you are my disciples indeed. [32]And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
[33]“We are Abraham’s seed,” they said, “and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say: You shall be set free?”
[34]Jesus answered them, “Truly, I tell you this: whoever commits sin is a servant of sin. [35]And a servant will not remain in the house, but the Son[1] will abide in it forever. [36]Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
[37]“I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, yet you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you. [38]I speak of things I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have seen in the presence of you father.”
[39]“Abraham is our father,” they said to Him.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus said, “you would do the works of Abraham. [40]But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. [41]You do the deeds of your father.”
“We were not born in fornication,” they said. “We have one Father -- God.”
[42]“If God were your Father,” Jesus said, “you would love me. For I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come on my own, but He sent me. [43]Why do you not understand what I say? Because you cannot hear my word. [44]You are of your father the devil, and you will do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, it comes natural --for he is a liar and the father of it. [45]Because I tell the truth, you will not believe me. [46]Which one of you convicts me of sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe me? [47]He who is of God will hear God’s words. But you cannot hear them, because you are not of God.”

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. 39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the deeds of your father. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
