(13) Out of Egypt to Nazareth

Matthew 2:19-23

19Now after Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20saying, “Arise and take the young child and His mother and go into the land of Israel, for those1 who sought the young child’s life are dead.”

21So he arose and took the young child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. So, being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside and went into the region of Galilee. 23He came and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”

(13) Out of Egypt to Nazerth

Matthew 2:19-23 (KJV)

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life. 21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

[1] Herod was probably not that worried about a child growing up and taking his kingdom, for he was about seventy when Jesus was born and in very bad health. He may have been more worried about Jesus growing up and taking the kingdom away from his son Antipater, who Herod had made king. Joseph says: “he governed the nation jointly with his father, being indeed no other than a king already . . . all the public affairs depended upon Antipater; and his power was such, that he could do . . . as he pleased” (Antiquities 17,1:1; 17,2:4). Herod killed Antipater and five days later Herod died. Then Jesus left Egypt and came to Nazareth.
