(183) Jesus Points Out His Betrayer

Matthew 26:21-25, Mark 14:18-21, Luke 22:21-23, John 13:21-30

[A]When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in spirit. And as they sat at the table eating,[1] He testified, saying, “Truly, I tell you, one of you who eats with me shall betray me. Indeed, his hand is on the table with mine!”

[B]They were deeply saddened, and every one of them, one by one, began to say to Him. “Lord, is it I? Is it I?”

[C]And He answered them, saying, “One of the twelve will betray me, the one who dips his hand with me into the dish. [D]The Son of Man is indeed going, just as it was determined and is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had never been born.”

[E]Then Judas, who betrayed Him, said, “Master, is it I?”

And Jesus said to him, “You have said it.”

[F]The disciples looked at one another, wondering which one He was speaking about. [G]And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them would do such a thing.

[H]Now one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved, was leaning against the bosom of Jesus. [I]So Simon Peter motioned to him, wanting him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about. [J]Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”

[K]“It is he,” Jesus answered, “to whom I will give the sop when I have dipped it.”

And when He had dipped the bread in the dish, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. [L]After this, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”

[M]Now none of the men at the table knew why He had said this to him, [N]for some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or that he should give something to the poor.

[O]So after Judas had taken the dipped bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

Matthew 26:21-25, KJV

21 And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? 23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. 24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Luke 22:21-23, KJV

21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

John 13:21-30, KJV

21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. 25 He then lying on Jesus’ breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
