(186) Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

Matthew 26:31-35, Mark 14:27-31, Luke 22:31-38, John 13:36-38

[A]Before they left, Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you shall follow me afterward.”

[B]“Lord,” Peter said to Him, “why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake.”

[C]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Look, Satan has ask for you, that he may sift you as wheat. [D]But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and when you are converted, strengthen your brothers.”

[E]Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be offended[1] because of me this night, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.’[2] [F]But after I am raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”

[G]But Peter said to Him, “Lord, even if everyone else is offended because of you, yet I won’t. I will never fall. I am ready to go with you to prison, and even death.”

[H]And Jesus said to him, “Will you lay down your life for my sake? Truly, I tell you this, Peter: before the cock has crowed today, you will deny three times that you know me. Yes, I tell you, this very night, before he crows twice, you will deny me thrice.”

[I]But Peter spoke even more emphatically, saying to Him, “Even if I have to die with you, I will not deny you in any way.” And all the disciples said the same.

[J]And He said to them, “When I sent you out without purse and bag and shoes, did you lack anything?”

      “No, nothing,” they answered.

[K]“But now,” He said to them, “if you have a purse, or bag, take it. And if you do not have a sword, sell your robe and buy one. [L]For I tell you that this which is written must yet be accomplished in me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’[3] For the things concerning me have an end.”

[M]Then they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “That is enough.”
