(202) Jesus Before Pilate

Matthew 27:11-14, Mark 15:2-5, Luke 23:1-5, John 18:28-38

[A]Now the whole bunch of them arose and led Jesus from Caiaphas to the judgement hall of Pilate; and it was early. They themselves did not go into the hall, for that would defile them and they would not be able to eat the Passover. [B]So Pilate came out to them and said, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”

[C]And they began accusing Him, saying, “We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King. [D]If He were not an evildoer,” they continued, “we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

[E]At this, Pilate said to them, “Then you take Him, and judge Him according to your law.” But the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put any man to death.” [F](This happened so that what Jesus had said would be fulfilled, signifying what kind of death He would die.)

[G]Then Pilate, the governor, went back into the judgment hall and called Jesus. And as Jesus stood before the governor, Pilate asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

“It is as you say,” Jesus said. “But are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”

[H]“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you to me. What have you done?”

[I]Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, so that I might not be delivered to the Jews; but now my kingdom is not from here.”

[J]At this, Pilate said to Him, “Are you a king then?”

“You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born, and this is why I came into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”

[K]“What is truth?” Pilate said to Him.

And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and told the chief priests and elders, “I find no fault in this man.”

[L]And they became even more fierce, with the chief priests and elders accusing Jesus of many things. “He stirs up the people,” they said, “teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.”

      But Jesus answered nothing.

[M]Then Pilate asked Him, “Aren’t you going to answer? Look, don’t you hear all these things they are saying against you?”

[N]But Jesus still did not say anything -- not one word. And Pilate, the governor, was greatly amazed at His silence.

(202) Jesus Before Pilate

Matthew 27:11-14, KJV

11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

(202) Jesus Before Pilate

Mark 15:2-5, KJV

2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing. 4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee. 5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

(202) Jesus Before Pilate

Luke 23:1-5, KJV

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. 5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

(202) Jesus Before Pilate

John 18:28-38, KJV

28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. 29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? 30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. 31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: 32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. 33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
