(207) The Death of Jesus

Matthew 27:45-56, Mark 15:33-41, Luke 23:44-49, John 19:28-30

[A]Now from about the sixth hour until the ninth hour the sun was darkened, and there was darkness over the whole land, over all the earth.

[B]About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”[1]

[C]After this, knowing that all things were now accomplished, and that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I’m thirsty.”[2]

[D]Some of those who stood there, when they heard Him, said, “Look, He’s calling for Elijah.”

[E]Now the vessel full of vinegar was sitting by. One of them immediately ran and got a sponge, and they filled it full of vinegar. Then it was put on a hyssop stick and put to Jesus’ mouth so He could drink. “Let Him alone,” said the one who did this. “Let’s see whether Elijah will come and take Him down.”

[F] “Yes,” the rest said. “Let Him be. Let’s see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

[G]So when Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, “It is finished.”[3] Then He cried out again with a loud voice, saying, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”

And having said this, He bowed His head and gave up the ghost.

[H]And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth shook, and the rocks were split, [I]and the graves were opened. (Now many bodies of the saints who slept arose [J]and came out of the graves after His resurrection, and they went into the holy city and appeared to many.)

[K]Now when the centurion who stood before Jesus, along with all those who were with him guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and all the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.”

And the centurion, also seeing how He cried out and died, glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous man.”

[L]When all the people who gathered to see the sight saw what had happened, they beat their breasts and returned home. [M]But all His acquaintances, and the many women who had ministered to Him and followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching these things. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome the mother of Zebedee’s sons. And many other women, who had come up with Him to Jerusalem, were also there.

Matthew 27:45-56, KJV

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. 55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.

(207) The Death of Jesus

Mark 15:33-41, KJV

33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. 36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. 37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. 38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. 39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. 40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; 41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

Luke 23:44-49, KJV

44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

(207) The Death of Jesus

John 19:28-30, KJV

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

(1) Ps. 22:1 (2) Ps. 22:15 (3) Earlier, in John 17:4, Jesus said He had "finished" the work that God gave Him to do; but He still faced the cross. And here, He still faced "three daysand three nights in the heart of the earth," but He had finished everything that God had given Him to do on earth before He would die.
