(69) The Parable of the Mustard Seed and Yeast

Matthew 13:31-35, Mark 4:30-34

[A]Then He presented another parable to them, saying: “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like? Or what illustration shall we use to describe it? The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. When it is sown in the earth, it is indeed the smallest of seeds in the earth. But after it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all the herbs. It shoots out great branches and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air may come and lodge in the branches and under its shade.”

[B]And He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.”

[C]With many such parables Jesus spoke the word to the multitude, as they were able to comprehend. In fact, He always used parables when He taught them. And when they were alone, He explained everything to His disciples, [D]so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.”[1]

(69) The Parable of the Mustard Seed and Yeast

Matthew 13:31-35, KJV

31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. 33 Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened. 34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them: 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

(69) The Parable of the Mustard Seed and Yeast

Mark 4:30-34, KJV

30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: 32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it. 33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. 34 But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
