(92) The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

Matthew 16:1-12, Mark 8:11-21

[A]Now the Pharisees, along with the Sadducees, came out and began questing and testing Jesus. They wanted Him to show them a sign from heaven. [B]But He answered them, saying, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ [C]And in the morning, you say, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and overcast.’ O you hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”

[D]And He sighed deeply in His spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek after a sign? Truly, I tell you, a wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign. But there shall be no sign given to this generation, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” [E]Then He left them, got back into the boat, and went to the other side.

Now when they reached the other side, his disciples realized they had forgotten to take any bread with them, except the one loaf they had in the boat. [F]So when Jesus said to them in a commanding way, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Herod,” [G]they reasoned among themselves, saying, “Is it because we have brought no bread?”

[H]When Jesus perceived this, He said to them, “O you of little faith. Why are you discussing among yourselves the bread you forgot to bring? [I]Do you not yet see or understand? Are your hearts still hardened. Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with the pieces you picked up?”

      “Twelve,” they said.

[J]”And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets did you fill with the pieces you picked up?”

      “Seven,” they said.

[K]Then He said to them, “How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you concerning bread, but was warning you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?”

[L]Then they understood that He was not telling them to beware of the leaven in bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

(92) The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

Matthew 16:1-12, KJV

The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. 5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Mark 8:11-21, KJV

They say unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?
