(97) An Epilephic Boy Healed

Matthew 17:14-23, Mark 9:14-32, Luke 9:37-45

[A]And it came to pass on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, many people met Him. When He came to His disciples, He saw a great crowd around them and the scribes arguing with them. [B]As soon as the crowd saw Him, they all were greatly amazed and ran to greet Him. [C]And He asked the scribes, “What are you arguing with them about?”

[D]Suddenly a man from the crowd came and knelt before Him, crying out, “Master, I brought my son to you. I beg you, Lord, to look at him and have mercy on him, for he is my only child. He is a lunatic and suffers greatly, often falling into the fire or water. A dumb spirit seizes him and throws him to the ground. He screams and foams at the mouth, grinding his teeth. And he becomes stiff. It bruises him and hardly ever leaves him alone. [E]I brought him to your disciples and asked them to cast him out, but they could not cure him.”

[F]Then Jesus answered him, saying, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I stay and put up with you? Bring your son here to me.”

[G]So they brought him to Jesus. On the way, as soon as he saw Jesus, the unclean spirit threw the boy down and convulsed him. He wallowed on the ground, foaming at the mouth.

[H]Jesus asked his father, “How long has he been like this?”

“Since a child,” he said. [I]”It has tried to kill him many times by throwing him into the fire and water. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

[J]Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

[K]Then the child’s father immediately cried out, and said with tears in his eyes, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”

[L]Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, so He rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, “You deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

Before he came out of him, the demon cried out and threw the boy into a violent convulsion. He didn’t move and looked like he was dead. “He’s dead,” the crowd said. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up. He arose and was cured from that very hour, for Jesus healed the child and gave him back to his father. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God.

[M]After Jesus went into the house, His disciples came to Him in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we cast him out?”

[N]“Because of your unbelief,” Jesus told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. [O]This kind, however, does not come out except by prayer and fasting.”

[P]Then they left that place and traveled through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know it. Everyone wondered at all the things He did, and while He and His disciples were staying in Galilee, He taught His disciples, saying, “Let these words sink deep into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be betrayed and delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He shall rise again the third day.”

They were filled with great sorrow, [Q]but they didn’t understand what He meant and were afraid to ask Him. This was hidden from them, so that they could not perceive it.

Matthew 17:14-23, KJV

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. 22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 23 And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

Mark 9:14-32, KJV

14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them. 15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. 16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? 17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. 30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. 31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. 32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

Luke 9:37-45, KJV

37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. 38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. 45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
